Formulation, design and characterization of mucoadhesive buccal film – a systematic review

Author: JEEVARAJ S, AKILADEVI D, ABDUL KAREEM S
Abstract: The buccal film is administered through the buccal drug delivery system. It is the most acceptable and desirable dosage type than other buccal drug delivery systems such as wafers, lozenges, microparticles, spray, and tablets since it is compact in bulk, dose, and easy to administer. Since it bypasses the first-pass metabolism, the buccal film is an efficient dosage type that increases bioavailability. It adheres to the buccal layer of the oral cavity satisfactorily, making it more accessible than other dosage types. It is a more accepted dosage type among geriatric and pediatric patients because it is low cost, biodegradable, rapid absorption, simple to treat, nonirritating, and there is no need to swallow the drug. This article emphasize about the formulation, design and characterization of mucoadhesive buccal film.
Keyword: Buccal film, low cost, first-pass metabolism, effective mucoadhesion, bioavailability.
