Introduction: Improper utilization of drugs prescribed is leading to prolongation of illness, complications and failure of the therapy. To address this issue, WHO has set certain indicators to assess the prescribing pattern, patient care and health facilities in view of assessing the rationality and increase in adherence.
Aim: To assess the rationality of HAART prescriptions at the study center with the help of WHO drug use indicators.
Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted among 915 patients receiving HAART therapy in Vijayawada city located of Andhra Pradesh, India. Data was collected in the WHO specified drug use indicator format and was analyzed using SPSS software version 21.
Results: Among the patient care indicators the consultation time was 6.3 minutes, the dispensing time was 75 seconds, percentage of medicines dispensed were 98%, labeled medicines are 94% and patients knowledge was 45%. For health facility indicators the presence of a copy of formulary/essential drug list and availability of key drugs are 100%.
Conclusion: The health facility indicators are well maintained, among patient care indicators there existed a wide gap between the observed value and optimal value. In particular the patients knowledge about the medication was very poor and need to be addressed.
