The relationship of bone mineral density (BMD), age and body mass index (BMI) among postmenopausal women, Samut Songkhram, Thailand

Author: YUTTANA SUDJAROEN, PIMPORN THONGMUANG
Abstract: Risk of osteoporosis is trend to increase in aging and women, especially in postmenopausal period. Aims of this study were determine BMD level for dividing of bone status including normal, osteopenia and osteoporosis; and correlate BMD, age and BMI in postmenopausal women. Cross-sectional study was carried out from October to December, 2020 and participants (N = 917) were recruited in public health service program, Sumut Songkhram, Thailand. Anthropometric data, such as age and BMI were recorded by physical examination and interview during health service. BMD was measured by calcaneal quantitative ultrasound and interpretation was accorded to BMD status (T-score). Foot width of participants was also calculated. Average age, BMD, BMI were 64± 8.46 years old, 1.78±0.91, 24.2±4.1 kg/m2, respectively. Postmenopausal women were divided to normal (n = 76), osteopenia (n = 652) and osteoporosis (n = 189); and significantly differences of age, BMI and other anthropometric statuses were found. BMD was negative related to age whereas positive related to BMI. Finding was shown that almost 80% of postmenopausal women had risk of osteoporosis and 20% of osteoporotic women had risk of bone fracture. BMD and anthropometric parameters of postmenopausal women were decreased with aging. Early screenings of BMD for osteoporosis in Thai postmenopausal women are needed to focus on community level. Assessment of anthropometric data of postmenopausal women in this study may also useful for monitoring of osteoporosis risk in public level.
