Skeletal Muscle Atrophy; A review on pathogenesis and biomarkers

Author: DESAI SNEHA, KRISHNA K L, SEEMA MEHDI, AYACHIT SHREYAS, SWERNA E
Abstract: Skeletal muscle atrophy is a clinical condition which occurs due to various preliminary factors including the food, blood sugar levels, steroidal medications, etc. Muscle is a profuse tissue which occupies around 40% of the body weight. In the present review we have concise the information which might prove to be useful in understanding the pathology of muscle atrophy in the individual with co-morbid conditions. The mechanisms like autophagy, mitochondrial dysfunction, ubiquitin protease system, Akt/PI3K pathway, oxidative stress, lipid metabolism and deregulated calcium homeostasis pathways involved in skeletal muscle loss are discussed. We also reviewed the available therapeutics to treat muscle atrophy and biomarkers that need to be further researched on to understand the disease condition. Targeting the loss of muscle fibers can reduce high risk of mortality in majority of deadly diseases like cancer, cachexia, aging and related comorbidities. Further detailed research needs to be done to elucidate the mechanism and drug targets for muscle atrophy. There is lot of scope for development of novel therapeutics for muscle atrophy commonly seen in many disease conditions.
