Implications of Nanotechnology in Nasal Drug Delivery System for the Hormonal Therapy of Suicidal Tendencies and Depression: A Review

Abstract: Depression remains a major cause of illness in more than half of the population of the world and eventually can lead to suicidal tendencies, thoughts and sufferings. Thyrotropin releasing hormone is a naturally occurring neurochemical substance which has euphoric, antidepressant and calming effects. Traditional ways of administration of thyrotropin releasing hormone via intraspinal route is quite complex and painful. Also, in order to overcome other problems like first pass metabolism, crossing blood brain barrier and the diffusibility in blood, a novel drug delivery has been introduced for a faster and more effective mode of administration. This novel administration of the drug is possible only due to advances in nanotechnology. As the oral route as well as the parenteral route via blood both are ineffective, so the only effective method for administration of thyrotropin releasing hormone is via intraspinal injections. In order to overcome all these hassles, a newer and instant drug delivery system has been introduced via nasal spray based on “nanoparticle drug delivery system” introduced via nasal spray to give an instant relief from depression and have shown to cause a significant drop in the suicidal thoughts. The purpose of this review is to lay the ground work for any future projects on this vary topic.
Keyword: nanoparticles, thyrotropin hormone, depression, suicide, intra-nasal spray.
