Inverted Periosteal Technique – A Clinically Viable Alternative to Treat Gingival Recession

Author: DR.SOHAM CHATTERJEE, DR NEETHA J.SHETTY
Abstract: Background: The periosteum is a composite biomaterial which comprises of a highly cellular connective tissue, a rich vascular plexus and an abundant source of growth factors and progenitor cells. Its own vascularity and enhanced regenerative potential makes it a suitable graft for achieving aesthetic root coverage in multiple recession defects Aim: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of the inverted periosteal technique root coverage procedure in treating multiple recession defects. Materials and Methods: This experimental study comprised of 8 patients with Millers class I and II gingival recessions in the maxillary posterior teeth. They were selected for achieving root coverage utilizing the inverted periosteal technique and also assessing the gingival biotype at baseline and at 6 months. Statistical analysis: The clinical parameters were compared at baseline and at 6 months using the paired t test. Statistical analysis was performed with the SPSS software version 20.0. IBM, USA. Results: On comparing the clinical parameters at baseline and at the end 6 months, a significant reduction in the mean recession height of 2.05±1.49 mm and a significant increase in the mean gingival thickness of 0.63±0.31mm were recorded. The patients showed satisfactory healing without any complications. Conclusion: The inverted periosteal technique has shown considerable success in achieving root coverage for multiple gingival recession defects. Further long term comparative studies should be performed with a greater sample size to validate the use of the periosteum in treating gingival recession successfully.
