The Effect of The Sorrel Extract on Hepatic Enzymes of Lead-Treated Rats

Author: SHEYDA NOORIZADEH, MONIREH RANJBAR
Abstract: The present study has been conducted to investigate the protective effect of acetone, butanol and methanol extracts of sorrel in female Wistar Rats. In this experimental study, 56 female rats were assigned to eight groups, each containing six rats. At the end of the experiments, blood samples were collected from the animals and hepatic enzymes, total protein, direct bilirubin, and total bilirubin were measured. Carotenoid, phenol, flavonoid, antioxidant vigor, anthocyanin tests were carried out on the sorrel extracts and the collected data were subjected to ANOVA analysis. The comparison of the serum level of AST hepatic enzyme in the group that had received methanol extract and the group that had been treated by lead-methanol extract indicated that the ingredients existent in methanol extract cause intensification of the lead effects. The serum level of ALT hepatic enzyme in the lead-methanol extract group and the lead-butanol extract group was found higher than in the group that had received the lead. Therefore, the effects caused by these extracts were found stronger. The serum level of ALP hepatic enzyme in the group that had received acetone extract-lead was lower than the lead-treated group. The amount of direct bilirubin of the lowest amount of enzyme was related to the methanol extract. It causes a reduction in the direct bilirubin. As for the total bilirubin, the group that had received lead-methanol extract was found having a higher amount than the lead-treated group. The ingredients existent in methanol extract were found increasing total protein amount.
