Background and scope: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the applied behaviour analysis (ABA) method for the treatment symptoms of children with autism.
Materials and Methods: This research was a quasi-experimental. The study population consisted of all children with autism in Urmia, in which 20 children with autism referred to Pishgaman Omid medical centre (3 to 7-year-old children with autism) were selected by random sampling method and randomly divided into two groups of experimental and control. Each of them was included 10 children in which ABA was performed. The Gilliam Autism Rating Scale (GARS) was used to collect data, including three subscales of communication, interactive and stereotypical behaviours.
Results: The findings of the present study indicate that the mean score of post-tests in the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the control group. In other words, it can be inferred that the intervention significantly reduces the symptoms of autism (with respect to social and stereotypical skills) in the experimental group in the post-test.
Conclusions: According to the results of the present study and the results of the GARS test, using the ABA method for 3 years (2013-2016) is effective in reducing the symptoms of children with autism.
