Abstract: The present study aims at investigating the effect of body image-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) on sexual self-esteem, body image concerns and sexual satisfaction in the women with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) referred to Shiraz’s counseling centers in the second half of 2018. The study is a semi-experimental research with control group and it was carried out based on covariance analysis. The study population included all the BDD-inflicted women who had referred to the counseling centers in Shiraz; out of these women, 30 women were selected as the study sample volume based on purposive sampling method and the study inclusion criteria and placed in two groups, namely the experimental group (n=15) and evidence group (n=15). The instrument used herein was sexual self-esteem inventory (Schwarz), body image inventory (Littleton) and sexual satisfaction questionnaire (Hudson-Harrison). The experimental group was subjected to nine 90-minute sessions of body image-based CBT program on a weekly basis but the control group did not receive any intervention. Inferential statistics and multivariate covariance analysis (MANCOVA) were employed for data analyses. The statistical analyses were carried out using SPSS-23. The results of MANCOVA indicated that the intervention has caused an increase in the women’s sexual self-esteem and sexual satisfaction and it also brings about decreases in the body image concerns. It can be generally stated that the CBT is effective in helping the BDD women hence it can be recommended for such women.
Keyword: cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), sexual self-esteem, body image concern, sexual satisfaction, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).
