Author: SWATI B.POKALE, DR.GHANSHYAM JADHAV
Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a highly prevalent endocrine as well as metabolic disorder which affects every 1 in 10 women worldwide of their reproductive age. PCOS mostly characterized by chronic anovulation , polycystic ovaries, and hyperandrogenism leading to symptoms of menstrual irregularity, acne, hirsutism and infertility. Obesity , elevated levels of male hormones (androgens) and Insulin resistance, are mainly associated with PCOS. The dietary variations, lack of exercise, deskbound lifestyle, and stress etc. are also causative factors for PCOS. PCOS can be caused because of distressed follicular development with early follicular growth as well as abnormal later stages of arrested follicle growth well before predictable maturation as well as Increased LH pulse frequency increases theca cells production of androgens while the lower concentration of FSH level affects overall follicle maturation and finally ovulation. Some allopathic drugs like Clomiphene citrate, Metformin and Tamoxifen are the most widely used drugs to treat PCOS with severe side effects. Now a days, many plants like, Ocimum tenuiflorum, Curcumin longa, Punica granatum, Pergularia daemia etc., have been highly admired sources which have the reward to lessen PCOS and also having hypoglycaemic and antiobesity effect. In this review, some of the familiar medicinal plants and their bioactive extracts which play a vital position in treatment of PCOS are summarized. It is concluded that the simply available helpful herbs along with the standard of living management is much effective in the prevention of PCOS than allopathic treatment.
