Abstract: Objectives: To study the hepatoprotective activity of bark extracts of Bassia latifolia (Sapotaceae) in PCM and ALC (Curative method) induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Background: In literature plant Bassia latifolia is widely mentioned for its uses in ulcers, fractures, bronchitis, ear complaints, expelling worms from the body and in orchitis. In literature the plant is mentioned for its use in congestion of liver/biliousness. Furthermore, availability of any scientific data is absent on this plant’s bark extracts’ hepatoprotective activity. Therefore, the current study aimed in exploring this plant’s bark extracts’ hepatoprotective activity in different hepatotoxic models as mentioned above in rats. Materials and methods: Hepatoprotective activity of this plant’s bark extracts was evaluated against ALC and PCM (curative aspect) stimulated hepatotoxicity model in rats, as well as Standard drug such as Silymarin was utilized as recommendation in every model. Results: Preliminary phytochemical studies with AEBBL and AQEBBL showed that in both the extracts phytoconstituents like flavonoids, triterpenoids, saponins, tannins and glycosides are present. On subjecting these 2 extracts for LD50 analyses, it has been observed that both the extracts does not resulted in mortality or any abnormal behavior even at the 2000mg/Kg dose level/body weight in mice. 3 distictive doses such as low 1/20th (100 mg/Kg), medium1/10th (200 mg/Kg) as well as high 1/5th (400 mg/Kg) doses from the maximum dose tested for LD50 were chosen for the current analysis. Silymarin, AEBBL and AQEBBL treated groups when compared to PCM and ALC (curative aspect) induced hepatotoxic rats the increased TST, TG, CHO, BILT, BILD, ALP, AST, ALT levels, wet liver volume, and wet liver weight were considerably reduced and there was significant increase in PRO and ALB levels. Also, there was fully or partial prevention of histo-pathological changes that are necrosis, fatty changes (steatosis) etc. Conclusion: The present study on hepatoprotective activity with AEBBL and AQEBBL confirmed the above mentioned effect because of several phytoconstituents like triterpenoids and flavonoids as these were already reported for their hepatoprotective activity.
