Anti-Cancer Activity Of Astragalus Membranaceus – A Review

Author: MIKHAIL ALEXANDROVICH BEREZUTSKY, ULIANA ANDREYEVNA MATVIENKO, ALENA YURIEVNA KARETNIKOVA, NATAL`IA ANATOLIEVNA DURNOVA
Abstract: Astragalus membranaceus (AM) is a well-known medicinal plant that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than two thousand years. This review describes the anti-cancer activity of the extract of this plant and some of its components: Astragaloside IV, polysaccharides, isoflavone formononetin. Experimental studies have revealed the ability of AM to affect various types of cancer cells: to induce their apoptosis, stop the cell cycle and suppress proliferation, inhibit migration, invasion and angiogenesis processes. The point was made that the anti-cancer effect is achieved with the help of numerous and different molecular and cellular mechanisms. AM also increases the sensitivity of cancer cells to drugs such as gefitinib, cisplatin, vinorelbine and improves the well-being of chemotherapy patients.
Keyword: Astragalus membranaceus, anti-cancer activity, astragaloside IV, polysaccharides, formononetin.
