Background: Arsenic contamination in groundwater from tin mining area is affected people the area around. This research was aimed to assess the risk of exposure to arsenic from consuming water in the underground water of people and explore the association between the arsenic concentration and water quality factor of the underground water for consumption in Sichon District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Southern Thailand.
Methods: In a cross-sectional survey study for health risk assessment of arsenic in groundwater from tin mining area. Sampling sites groundwater and Samples were collected in the area of household in Village No.5 and No.12 Chalong Sub-district, Sichon District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand. Sample collection locations are presented in detail on the sampling map of study area. Analysis of groundwater samples and extracted were analysed by using the ICP OES. The study was conducted by collecting the data from the groundwater well for consumption from 2 villages in Sichon District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province which is the household that consumes water supply from the groundwater well and being the area nearby the mining and far from the mine 30 and 20 households respectively. Data analysis was performed by using Simple Regression Analysis and Multiple Regression Analysis.
Results: The consequence revealed that turbidity is the factor associated with an arsenic concentration in groundwater well with the statistically significant (p=0.002; 95%CI: 0.0005 – 0.0023). When does the association test which classifies by the village found that Village No.5, the turbidity was associated with an arsenic concentration in the groundwater well with the statistically significant (p=0.009; 95%CI: 0.0005 – 0.0032). Moreover, the risk value of causing the cancer of arsenic from consuming water in the groundwater well, Village No.5 is 3.5 × 10-4 and Village No.12 1.52 × 10-4. In addition to the average risk value of causing the cancer of arsenic in each area is more than 10-6 (Risk = 10-6) which is exceeded the acceptable standard.
Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest regular monitoring of groundwater quality in educational institutions. the arsenic concentration in the groundwater well for consumption in the standard, safe for consumption there still has the risk of having cancer that exceeded the acceptable criterion in both areas.
