Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics with and without Platelet Rich Fibrin: A Randomised Parallel Design Study

Author: DR SOHAM CHATTERJEE S C, DR NEETHA J SHETTY N S, DR DAVID KADAKAMPALLY D K, DR ASHITH M V A M, DR SRIKANT NATARAJAN S N
Abstract: Objectives: To radiologically evaluate the outcome of Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO) technique, when used with and without Platelet rich fibrin (PRF), on hard tissue changes. Secondarily, to clinically assess the influence of PRF on gingival thickness. Materials and Methods: 16 systemically healthy participants undergoing active orthodontic treatment were included in this single blinded randomised parallel designed study. The participants of test group, underwent PAOO with PRF and the control group underwent PAOO alone. Radiological assessments of the cortical bone thicknesses were made along with the clinical assessment of the gingival biotype, at baseline and at the end of 6 months post treatment. Results: A statistically significant increase in the cortical bone thickness in the middle lingual and apical facial regions were observed in test group, when compared to their respective regions in the control group. The study also recorded a statistically significant increase in gingival biotype. (P=0.05). Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study, it was suggestive that, PAOO in combination with PRF showed a statistically significant increase in the cortical bone thickness, enhanced healing and improved soft tissue regeneration in comparison to PAOO alone. Future long term studies are required to validate the results obtained in the study.
