The dosage form is very important in any system of healing as it provides a physical form to drugs and once physical forms are there, the accurate dose of the drug can be given to the patient very conveniently. In Ayurveda, dosage forms are classified as solid, semisolid, liquid and gaseous state. These forms are developed according to the nature of drug, availability, specific disease target, its potency, molecular weakness to form compound. The basic dosage forms (Panchavidha kashaya kalpana) are considered as novel but due to some disadvantages like unavailability of fresh material in every season, larger dose, palatability, short shelf life, some derived and modified preparations like pills, confections, biomedical fermented formulations, oleaginous preparation, syrups and granules came into existence. With the advent of Rasa Shastra, emphasized had been given to prepare Rasaushadhies (Herbomineral) by using drugs having metal and mineral origin along with herbs. Conventional dosage forms are designed mainly emphasized on stage of disease and patient condition along with their role to balance the physical and psycho humors. Ayurvedic doctrines tell, to treat a patient as a whole and not a disease alone. A crude drug can be used internally when it undergoes various Samskara (processing techniques) and form a particular dosage form. This article provides an overview of the various classifications of pharmaceutical dosage forms as well as general considerations in dosage form design.
