Evaluation of polyherbal formulation against the Isoniazid and Rifampicin induced oxidative stress in rats’ brain and heart.

Abstract: The study proposed to evaluate the antioxidant property of polyherbal formulation-Heptoplus against the Rifampicin (RIF) and Isoniazid (INH) induced oxidative stress in the rat brain and the heart. Heptoplus is a polyherbal drug, which has phyllanthin as the active ingredients. Sprague Dawely rats are grouped in to four. Group I have healthy control rats, group II rats severed as disease control in which INH and RIF are administrated orally, group III rats are orally fed Heptoplus along with the offending agents and group IV rats are administrated Heptoplus alone. Glutathione (GSH), catalases (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was assayed along with the Lipid peroxides levels in the brain and heart of the rats. Intoxicated rats' manifested a low GSH content with a sharp decline of CAT and SOD activities beside the sharp elevation of LPO in their brain and hearts. However, Heptoplus treated rat heart and brain showed a regulated level of LPO with a healthy antioxidant index. From this study it is clearly revealed that, Heptoplus co administration enabled the rats to prevent the development of oxidative stress, by maintaining their indigenous antioxidants status in their brain and the hearts.
