Evaluation the Effect of Glutaraldehyde Solution Addition on Some Mechanical Properties of Heat Cured Acrylic Denture Base Material

Author: NUSAIBA M MUHAMMAD, DR HANAN A KHALAF
Abstract: Background: Heat-cured acrylic resin is considered one of the most commonly used denture base material in denture construction ,but this material shown to be lacking ideal properties . Many researches have been carried out to modifiy poly (methylmethacrylate) (PMM) to improve the properties of resin materials . The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of addition of glutaraldehyde solution on some mechanical properties of heat cured acrylic denture base material (impact strength ,transverse strength and surface hardness). Materials and methods: glutaraldehyde solution was added , dispersed and sonicated in monomer (MMA) in different percentages 2% and 3%, by volume, then mixed with acrylic resin powder .The mixture was packed and cured as general conventional method . Ninety specimens were prepared for testing impact strength , transverse strength and surface hardness . Each main group was subdivided into three subgroups according to percentage of addition (control and experimental groups). Each sub group involved 10 specimens for each test. Results: The results were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) . Significant increase in impact strength , transverse strength and surface hardness of modified acrylic with 2 % and 3 % glutaraldehyde solution addition compared to control group. Conclusion: It was concluded that the maximum increase in impact strength, transverse strength and surface hardness was observed with 3 % of glutaraldehyde solution.
Keyword: poly (methylmethacrylate) ,glutaraldehyde ,impact strength ,transverse strength , surface hardness.
