Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) cause liver diseases and can be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy. Since the association of HBV and HCV is documented around the world, the present study aim to estimate the incidence of HBV and HCV infections during pregnancy in Basra province south of Iraq. Blood samples from 1100 pregnant women were obtained (with or without surgery or blood transfusion) and the HBV and HCV were detected by ELISA. The majority of pregnant women were in the age group 2 (20-29 yrs.). The results showed that out of the 1100 subjects, 209 women had either surgery or blood transfusion (SB) leaving 891 women without such processes No surgery or blood transfusion (NSB). The total number of pregnant women who had a viral infection was 10 (0.909%), 8 of them were in the SB group (3.827%) and only 2 infected women (0.224%) belong to group NSB with a dominancy of HCV infection. The majority of infections found in age group 2 (20-29 yrs.). HBV and HCV infections were higher in pregnant women living in Basrah who had either a caesarean surgery or blood transfusion. In addition HCV infection was the dominant type.
