Impact of Xerostomia on Complete Denture Functions

Abstract:

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of dry mouth, its association with age, gender, Clinical findings and its impact on oral functions in a selected sample of edentulous elderly South Indian population.
Study Design: The study includes 220 simple random sample aged 40 -80 yrs. Dry mouth symptoms and impact of xerostomia on denture functions were assessed using a structured questionnaire. Xerostomic status and its impact on oral functions was also confirmed clinically.
Result: Of the total 220 recruited participants,123 (55%) were men and 97 ( 45% ) were women aged between 40-80years. 150 participants (68%) had reported a subjective feeling of dry mouth with a prevalence of ( 60% ) in men and (40%) in women . Upon clinical examination, all 150 participants of the 170 participants with fairly satisfactory dentures showed one or more signs suggestive of Xerostomia.
Conclusion: Among elderly complete denture wearers xerostomia is significantly more prevalent in men and it moderately affects denture functions and overall satisfaction with dentures.
