The implementation impact of mulch and shade technology on the productivity and quality of potato seeds

Author: YOHANES SETIYO, BAMBANG ADMADI HARSOJUWONO, KETUT AYU YULIADHI
Abstract: Climate change has a huge impact on the growth and productivity of potato plants, therefore potato farmers in Indonesia have started to have begun to use shade in the form of plastic and plastic mulch to cover the beds. Plastic shade with a height of 80 – 100 cm is able to: (1) maintain the intensity of sunlight received by plants in the range between 651 – 1435 lux, (2) maintain the environmental temperature between 21 – 28 oC and (3) maintain environmental humidity between 55 – 82 %. Meanwhile, plastic mulch is useful in (1) controlling weed growth, (2) maintaining soil moisture content at field capacity and controlling soil temperature at 12 – 24 oC. The combination of applying plastic shade technology and plastic mulch in potato cultivation for seedlings can improve the quality of plant growth. The total weight of potato plant biomass increased 17.2 %. The quality of plant growth has a direct effect on tuber productivity, tuber productivity has increased by 3.3 %.
