Antiurolithiatic Activity Studies on Ipomoea Sepiaria Roxb.

Author: PRASANTH B, DEEPA JOSE, ALEYKUTTY N A
Abstract: A large number of plants have been used in India since ancient times, which claim the efficient cure of urinary stone. Therefore it is worthwhile to look for alternate plant based therapy as lot of plant species are utilized in indigenous sytems of medicines for the treatment of kidney stones. Ipomoea sepiaria Roxb., also known as Purple heart glory is a slender vine belonging to family Convolvulaceae. In Sanskrit it is known as Lakshmana, in Hindi as Bankalmi and in Malayalam as Tirutali. It is one among the ten sacred plants known collectively as “Dasapushpam” in Kerala. Antiurolithiatic activity of the plant Ipomoea sepiaria Roxb. was assessed in this study. Hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts were prepared using the shade dried powdered plant material. The hexane and ethyl acetate extracts were found to have significant effect on inhibition of crystallisation in the in vitro Nucleation assay studies. So hexane and ethyl acetate extracts were selected for further studies. In vivo antiurolithiatic study of the extracts was done using ethylene glycol induced urolithiasis model in albino rats. The urine biochemical parameters, serum nitrogenous parameters, antioxidant enzymes levels, promoters and inhibitors for stone formation in the kidney homogenate, as well as kidney histopathology results from animal studies indicated that hexane and ethyl acetate extracts were having ameliorative effect on urolithiasis. Ethyl acetate extract was found to have better activity. The phytoconstituents present in the ethyl acetate extract of Ipomoea sepiaria may be responsible for the activity, as they prevent the stone formation and promote the excretion of smaller particles from the kidney and thereby reducing the chance of crystal retention in the urinary tract. Therefore the phytoconstituents in the extract can be separated, identified and screened to develop as potential remedy for urolithiasis.
