Background: The purpose of the current study is to analyse the management of Rabbit Syndrome(RS) in psychiatric patients who were treated with long term anti- psychotic drugs. Rabbit syndrome is a rare side effect of long term use of antipsychotics, and is characterised by the rapid and rhythmic movements of oral cavity in vertical manner, at a frequency of 4-6 Hz, usually 5 Hz.
Method: An extensive search was performed in PubMed, CDSR, NHS Evidence, NIHR-HTA, WHO Global Index Medicus, and ClinicalTrials.gov until the end of September 22, 2020. The systematic review and meta analysis was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and MOOSE checklist. English language articles between 1964 to September 2020 were screened manually and the related studies were finally included.
Results: From extensive electronic database and literature search, and screening using PRISMA guidelines, 31 studies were included in the review. The studies were assessed for effectiveness of anticholinergics in managing rabbit syndrome. RS was found to develop more frequently in females than the male counterparts, and occurred mostly in middle aged and elderly individuals. Mood disorder and antipsychotic use are potential risk factors. On statistical analysis using Review Manager 5.4.1, it was found out that there is 20% less chance of RS symptom resolution in people taking anticholinergics to manage rabbit syndrome.
