Background and objectives: Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia in pasung (physical restraint or confinement) often have a poor physical appearance, decreased life and social skills. The Hedwin model is a skills training program, which is a pasung rehabilitation activity that provides life-skills education to post-pasung people diagnosed with schizophrenia to empower them. This study explores the feasibility of the Hedwin model in improving the life skills of those diagnosed with schizophrenia currently being physical restraint or confinement.
Methods: An entirety of 82 shackled people diagnosed with schizophrenia was assigned to participate in this Hedwin model intervention. A quasi-experimental design involving a pre-post test analysis was carried out to investigate the result of the model intervention.
Results: There was a significant change before and after applying the Hedwin model in those diagnosed with schizophrenia in pasung in both intervention and control groups (p-value 0.001).
Conclusion: Hedwin model encourages development of lifeskills in patients with schizophrenia in pasung through family and community members' roles. Increased life skills can improve mental health quality dan self-esteem in those diagnosed with schizophrenia with pasung. This feasibility study of the Hedwin model has the potential to improve life skills in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia who are physically restrained. Therefore, it is crucial to apply the Hedwin model to manage schizophrenia patients to gain independence.
