Gums and Mucilage as Multi-Functional Pharmaceutical Agent

Author: SHUBHAM SHIVSHANKAR PRAJAPATI, MADHAVI APTE
Abstract: Additives play a major role in all pharmaceutical dosage forms. The majority of the pharma sector is progressively shifting their interest in natural drugs and excipients over synthetic ones. These days, large amounts of pharmaceutical excipients are derived from natural origins. When it comes to natural excipient gums and mucilage had played a vital role in performing multiple roles and, in certain instances, directly or indirectly regulate its rate or extend of release of a drug such as tablet binders, emulsifier, disintegrating, suspending, gelling agent and coating agent. But the research in this field is limited and many activities of gums and mucilage have been unexplored. Plant-derived gums and mucilage’s comply with many of the criteria of pharmaceutical excipients as they are non-toxic, safe, readily available, and with fewer regulatory concerns than the synthetic once. In the present review we have discussed different sources of gums and mucilage, and as a potential candidate for various pharmaceutical excipient such as binding , coating, microencapsulating, gelling agent and as a potential candidate for various drug delivery such as colon targeted, ocular delivery along with the cytoprotective nature and biological activity of some gums and mucilage. The purpose of the study is to explore the ability of gums and mucilage as a natural excipient and in the development of different drug delivery systems in the pharmaceutical industry.
