Preparation and optimization of Dugdhavardhan granules- A herbal galactagogue

Abstract: Introduction: Agalactia or hypogalectia are the common complaints found in the nursing mothers which is increasing in numbers day by day. There are various causes behind this and it needs an effective solution as a healthy baby is the future of the Country. There are abundant medicines available in the market which helps in increasing the quantity of breast milk including some herbal drugs. Dugdhavardhan churna is one of the compound herbal formulation mentioned in the Ayurveda classics. There are some herbs mentioned in the classics supposed to be helpful for increasing the quantity of the breast milk like stanyajanan dashemani (group of ten herbal drugs) mentioned in Charaka Samhita. In present time of modernization, many of the traditional dosage forms are in need to be modified into new dosage forms in view of numerous factors like palatability, shelf life, convenience etc. Materials and methods: Here the churna (powder form) is modified into new dosage form of granules and optimization to obtain the optimal product has been carried out. Total six batches prepared by using different excipients, sugar quantity and liquid media. Various tests and analysis performed to determine the superior batch. Results and Discussion: Analytical testing also done like organoleptic characters, physicochemical analysis etc. The results obtained were noted and discussed. Conclusion: Dugdhavardhan granules of batch 5 and batch 6 are found to be of more palatable and analytically superior than the other batches prepared.
