Qurs Mafasil Jadid (QMJ) is a compound Unani formulation, which is mentioned in Qarabadin-i
Majidi, a pharmacopoeia of Unani Medicine. It is described for the management of various joint pains
of diverse aetiologies. This Qurs (tablet) has three herbal ingredients i.e. Suranjan Talkh, Chob Zard
and Gond Kekar. The standardization of herbal drugs, especially formulation having more than one
ingredient is the basic requirement for the quality control of the drugs. WHO had laid downs various
parameters for the quality check of herbal drugs. The effect of any compound herbal formulation
depends upon the chemical constituents of the ingredients of the formulation. The presence of active
constituents and absence of contaminants like bacteria, virus, heavy metal, aflatoxin etc. is necessary
for the safety and efficacy of the formulation. The Good manufacturing practice (GMP) is the key
requirement for the preparation of the quality herbal drugs. SOPs are the set of standards which
should be strictly implemented during the preparation of herbal formulation. Quality control of herbal
formulation is utmost important to get the consistent and optimal result in disease condition. For the
purpose of getting authentic and reliable results QMJ was subjected to basic parameters like Ash value,
pH, extractive values etc to develops standard for quality check. The present study laid down the
standards for purity and quality of QMJ and can be used as a reference in future to maintain quality and therapeutic authenticity of the formulation.
