This study was conducted to investigate Giardia intestinalis infection rate in K9 Police dogs in the Middle and
South Provinces of Iraq during the period from 1/October/ 2019 until 31/March /2020 . One hundred fecal
samples of different ages and sexes were examined for 18S (Small subunit rRNA) gene by using conventional
PCR. The total infection rate was 43% ,which divided into in males 47.82% and in females 38.88% with
significant (P=0.05) difference .High infection rate ( 47.05%) was found in the age group 1-3 years and the
lower infection rate (37.50%) in the age group under one year without significant difference. High infection
rate ( 55.00%) was recorded in October while a lower infection rate ( 33.33%) without significant difference.
There was no significant effect of areas in the infection rate. The sequencing of ten Giardia isolates revealed high identities (99.61-100%) with G. intestinalis Australian isolate.
The result was concluded that a high infection rate of G. intestinalis in K9 Police dogs in the Middle and South
Provinces and only the sex has an effects in the infection rate regard to the age ,months and areas.
