Ultra-deformable vesicular carriers for enhanced Permeation of Drugs.

Author: E HIMA BINDU, DR.G.V.RADHA
Abstract: In recent years the use of intact skin has been explored as a dormant route of drug administration. The drug can be delivered into the systemic circulation in a very continuous and a controlled manner through this route. Because of this reason, more focus has been kept by the researchers on Transdermal drug delivery. But the drug delivery through this route is restricted by the barrier function performed by the skin. This limitation can be successfully overcome by the use of Transferosomes as drug carriers. Transferosomes are the flexible, deformable vesicular carriers that can penetrate the skin through the very tiny pores that are present in the cells of the skin. Due to their deformable nature, they can squeeze themselves through these pores which are very smaller than the vesicular carriers. Transferosomes can be formulated by employing phospholipids and edge activators in different ratios. Because of their amphiphilic nature, theycan accommodate hydrophilic, lipophilic, and amphiphilic drugs. These different types of drugs search for a suitable place in the elastic vesicles before they get delivered underneath the skin. Transferosomes are also deployed in the administration of controlled-release formulations, Anti- Cancer drugs, Proteins, Peptides, and drugs with high molecular weight like insulin. Targeting the drug peripherally and immunization through the transdermal route can also be achieved by this novel type of delivery system
