Most commonly used route of administration for drugs is oral route. Hindrances in oral absorption include poor aqueous solubility or permeability of drugs and also wide range of pH exhibited by gastro intestinal tract. Studies demonstrated that incorporation of drug into nanocarrier can improve the bioavaibility of drug there by reduction in dose, reducing the toxicity associated due to high dose of drug. Liposomes are stable and biocompatible nanocarrier ,which are able to entrap both lipophilic and hydrophilic drug to its compartment so shows the controlled release effect. This review article mainly deals with liposomes, their composition, and method of preparation, types of liposomes, application and recent trends, the challenges associated with the conventional formulations and novel type of liposomes. Liposomes are used for targeted drug delivery, in treatment of cancer,in cosmetic and agro food industry so Nanocarrier system is a great challenge over conventional formulation to reduce the problem related with other formulation.
