Objective: The objective was to study dual layer matrix tablet of metoprolol tartrate and lisinopril maleate.
Method: Dual layers Were processed by using direct compression method. Micromeritics parameters of
bilayer tablets were determined and dissolution apparatus USP Type II was used for in vitro drug release study
using 0.1 N HCl for immediate release of lisinopril maleate layer for 30 minutes and phosphate buffer at pH
6.8 for 8 h for metoprolol tartrate sustained layer and the data were adapted into various kinetic models.
Results and conclusion:. The release profile indicates Higuchi’s kinetics. Micromeritic parameters were
within compendium range. In formulation sodium starch glycolate was selected for formulation of immediate
release layer and Methocel k15m pcg for sustained release formulation and decrease frequency of dosing for
more control of hyper tension decrease frequency of dosing for more control of hyper tension. LM5 showed
97.5% drug release for 8 h. and dual layer tablets was prepared successfully to provide the immediate release
effect of lisinopril maleate and the sustained release effect of metoprolol tartrate Thus, this optimized bilayer
tablet formulation can be successfully used in the treatment of hypertension.
