Poly vinyl alcohol Hydrogel and its Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Applications: A Review

Abstract: The chemical versatility of Poly vinyl alcohol made it a potential agent for various pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. It is a water soluble and biocompatible polymer. Its excellent physical properties like mucoadhesive, swelling make it suitable for the diverse drug delivery applications. Poly vinyl alcohol hydrogels have been used and are being investigated for use in many biomedical and pharmaceutical applications from drug delivery to material for contact lenses, by manipulating the properties or by altering the process of preparation including the type and concentration of crosslinks within the hydrogel material. This review surveys the synthesis, properties, methods of crosslinking and research work on Poly vinyl alcohol hydrogels focusing its use in the pharmaceutical and biomedical fields. Poly vinyl alcohol hydrogel has been exploited as the material to fabricate various drug delivery systems like- ocular inserts, ocular films, nanoparticles, microspheres, floating microspheres, mucoadhesive, targeted drug delivery like colon, rectal, buccal, transdermal, pH and temperature sensitive drug delivery systems, swelling controlled drug delivery systems. Poly vinyl alcohol hydrogel is used in biomedical field like fabrication of various tissue grafts like cardiovascular graft, bone tissue scaffold, embolization material, artificial skin, osteoblast cultures, artificial pancreas, artificial islets, artificial articular cartilages, cultured fibroblast cells, intervertebrate disc nuclei, reconstruction of vocal cords, membranes in artificial kidneys, cell scaffold. Poly vinyl alcohol is also used in other biomedical applications like photonic crystal sensor material, ferrogels for artificial muscles, pH sensitive membranes, artificial meniscus, artificial membrane for diffusion studies, material for contact lenses. Poly vinyl alcohol is a very good homo and hetero polymer, therefore many more pharmaceutical and biomedical applications are possible.
