Comparative Pharmacological Evaluation of Various Extracts of Cajanus Cajan (Leaves), Caesalpinia Pulcherrima (Leaves) and Tamarindus Indica (Flowers) on Anxiolytic Activity in Mice

Author: BALAKRISHNA VUYYALA, DR D SENTHIL KUMAR, DR THAKKALAPALLY LAKSHMI
Abstract: Anxiety is a natural human state wherein everybody experiences in their life. Anxiety is the foremost common psychological state problem within the world and it increases rapidly. The Objective of the present study was a comparative investigation of the antianxiety activity of three traditionally used medicinal plants- Cajanus cajan (Leaves), Caesalpinia pulcherrima (Leaves), and Tamarindus indica (Flowers). The activity of various extracts nhexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol of all 3 plants was evaluated using an elevated plus maze and Actophotometer models. The studies were conducted on Swiss albino mice and the test materials were administered per oral route. In contrast of selected 3 plants, results indicate that the methanol extract of Tamarindus indica flowers showed maximum and significant dose-dependent effect at 200 and 400 mg/kg on Elevated plus maze and Actophotometer models, the results were just like the standard antianxiety agent diazepam (2 mg/kg). The results were shown to be decreased in a dose-dependent model compared to control. As the phytochemical screening of methanol extract exhibited the presence of polyphenols could be liable for the anxiolytic potential of T.indica. Hence this plant could also be used as a useful anti-anxiety agent.
