Nano Herbal Oils Application on Nonwovens

Author: SWATI KORGAONKAR, DR.USHA SAYED
Abstract: Nanotechnology is the study of materials on a scale of 1 to 100nm in size. The surface properties of the substrate are enhanced if the particles are in the nano form. There are various conventional methods through which different properties are imparted to the fabrics often which lead to permanent effects at first but loses their function after laundering or wearing. In the present study, essential oils are been used. Essential oils possess antibacterial properties and are screened as potential sources for antimicrobial compounds. Terpenes and terpenoids are components derived from essential oils. Essential oils could act as bio preservatives, reducing or eliminating pathogenic bacteria. In the present study, a freshly prepared mixture of oils was extracted from the curry leaves, hibiscus flower, and a drop of coconut oil were used for the preparation of mixture oil. As the need for higher durability of the fabrics can be provided by using nanotechnology as a nano-particle have a large surface area to volume ratio and high surface energy, thus having greater affinity to the fabric and leading to an increase in durability of function. Also, Besides, a coating of Nanoparticle on fabric will not affect their breathability or hand feel. These natural herbal oils are rich in antimicrobial properties as well as gives fragrance and cosmological benefits. The stability of the emulsion is good and has a very good antimicrobial finish on the fabric. The emulsion of the above composition of oils is been prepared and applied by continuous processing of the fabric. The particle size of the Nanoemulsion was observed as 28nm in size. This process is very cost-effective. The samples are tested for its antimicrobial properties through AATCC 100 and hence proving the antimicrobial finish sustained onto the fabric.
