Herbal immunomodulator is a substance that stimulates the immune system components, including both innate and adaptive immune responses, or suppresses them. Currently, the modulation of the immune system by different medicinal plant products has become the subject of scientific research worldwide. As most synthetic immunomodulators pose severe toxicity or other side effects, plant-derived immunomodulators are seen as safer alternatives. While immunostimulants are used to treat cancer, different autoimmune and hypersensitivity disorders can be helped by immunosuppressants. Non-specific, widespread immune system modulation is induced by medicinal plants with effects on different immune cells, namely macrophages, natural killer cells, and granulocytes. Therefore, a better understanding of plant immunomodulatory roles, their mode of action, and phytoconstituents would allow us to identify natural lead compounds for the development of novel and safe immunomodulatory compounds.
