Bioactive compounds from algae can be seen as a gateway to a multibillion-dollar in commercial scale. Algae have drawn great interest as a renewable and safe source for various bioactive compounds since they are rich reservoirs and renewable source for natural products. These include photosynthetic pigments, polysaccharides, proteins, fatty acids, phenolic compounds, vitamins and minerals that characterized by a broad spectrum of biological activities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antidiabetic, antiallergic, anticoagulant, analgesics activities and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory. The algal bioactive composition varies greatly depending on algal species, harvest season, growth habitat, and environmental parameters, geographic origin and culture conditions. In addition, algae have unique properties to help them survive even in adverse conditions, these unique attributes led to production more unique secondary metabolites under the stressed situations. This review is an update to the information about algal bioactive compounds with an emphasis on their biological and pharmacological efficacy.
