Abstract:

Historically, the urbanization process is associated with economic and social factors. In search of a better life,
people move from the countryside to the city, where most of the national economy is concentrated, where
there is a higher level of literacy and education, more opportunities to use transport and social services, more
employment options. The basis of urbanization is economy of scale and productivity gains that make cities
more productive.
The purpose of this article is to analyze the development of urban agglomeration under the influence of driving
forces, the spatial and temporal patterns of agglomeration development in Russian urban agglomerations.
There is no unity in methodological approaches in the ongoing research on agglomeration, spatial
development, and competition. Urban development, agglomeration development is a complex,
multidimensional process characterized by the multidimensional nature of the study. Resulting from the
process of urbanization, the urban agglomerations development is accompanied by stratification in the system
of settlements between the center and the periphery of the region. The article identifies and analyzes the
causal relationships of spatial and temporal changes in the agglomeration, analyzes the main directions of
development, structural changes in the agglomeration. The growth of agglomeration development over the
past decades has shown that it is important to use a scientific approach for strategic planned sustainable
development, effective management and rational planning of urban agglomerations. Today, urban agglomeration
is becoming the basis for the socio-economic development of a number of regions. The efficiency of territory
management is determined by the measure of analysis, the use of spatial development patterns of settlement
systems.
