Objective: Herbal cosmetics and Herbal medicine are use of plants for medicinal and therapeutic purpose for
curing of diseases and improve human health. Studies describe that sun rays are produced some harmful effects
like sunburn & drug induced photo-toxicity and chronic risks of sun ray exposure like pigmentation, melanoma,
crack, sunburn and cancer. The aim of the current work is to investigate the sun protection factor (SPF)
activity of different extracts of Polyalthia longifolia leaves which is belongs to the family Annonaceae.
Methods: Three extracts of Polyalthia longifolia leaves (Alcohol, Aqueous, Pet.ether) were prepared & tested
for their sun protection factor (SPF) using Mansur formula from 290 to 320 nm.
Results: The alcoholic extract of Polyalthia longifolia showed SPF value 9.4035± 0.0559 that is greater than
other two solvents i.e.; aqueous & pet. ether. In-vitro SPF of aqueous extract was found to be 3.7056, and
pet.ether extract shows SPF activity 2.1244.
Conclusion: This study concluded that leaves of Polyalthia longifolia extracts can be utilized as added
substances in other sunscreen formulations to upgrade their SPF value.
