Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a potentially disabling condition that affects approximately 10% of
bereaved people. Problem Solving Therapy (PST) has emerged as a promising psychotherapy for mental
disorder in older adults, although the efficacy of PST in this population has not been well described for
Prolonged grief disorder. We examined the effectiveness of PST for the treatment of negative emotions
in elderly with prolonged grief disorder. A randomized clinical trial of 34 patients with PGD attending
the outpatient Kahrizak nursing home 2016-2017 in Iran. All patients received 12 weekly 2-hour group
therapy sessions that consisted of PST techniques. Measures of PGD and negative emotions by clinical
interview and self-reported measures at the 6-month follow-up. The DASS and PGD Self-Rating Scale
scores decreased significantly in the PST group; depression (F(1,27)=25.911, P<0/0001, Partial ?2=0.494),
anxiety (F(1,27)=22.279, P<0/0001, Partial ?2=0.449), stress (F(1,27)= 34.110, P<0/0001, Partial ?2=0.549)
and PGD (F(1,27)= 42.056, P<0/0001, Partial ?2=0.609), but not in the TAU group. This study showed
Problem Solving Therapy that reduced negative emotions of the death is an important component to
achieve optimal reductions in PGD severity. Further PST suggesting that it is an effective treatment for
older people with PGD.
