Anti-Arthritic Activity of Various Fractions of Trigonella Foenum Graecum L. Leaves in Experimental Animal Models

Author: V.G.GAJERA , DR. R. MEEL, DR. D.P. SHAH
Abstract: The main aim of study is to evaluate the anti-arthritic effect of different fractions of fenugreek in arthritic rats. Different fractions were prepared by successive solvent extraction methods by using the various solvents and their % yields were calculated. Arthritis was induced by Formaldehyde and FCA in rats. paw volume was measured on different days in formaldehyde induced arthritis. Body weights and paw volume of all animals were also measured at weekly interval and at the end of experiment, some haematological, anti-oxidant parameters were measured. Organ weight and histopathology also performed at the end of experiment. On preliminary phytochemical studies extracts showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, flavonoids and phenolic compounds. The results of our study revealed that chloroform fraction (100 and 200 mg/kg) and aqueous fraction (100 and 200 mg/kg) were significantly decrease paw volume, arthritic index, ESR, RF, CRP, AST, ALT, ALP, TNF-a, IL-1ß, IL-6 and increase A/G ratio, spleen, thymus organ weight. Both fractions also possess anti-oxidant properties. Therefore, chloroform fraction (100 and 200 mg/kg) and aqueous fraction (100 and 200 mg/kg) showed anti-arthritic activity.
