Factors Associated With Gait, Balance And Strength Abnormalities Among Indonesian Elderly

Author: INDRI HAPSARI SUSILOWATI, SUSIANA NUGRAHA, SABARINAH, BONARDO PRAYOGO HASIHOLAN, SUPA PENGPID, KARL PELTZER
Abstract: This study aimed to identify factors associated with gait, balance and strength problems among elderly Indonesians in order to inform fall prevention programs for this population. The subjects aged > 60 years were randomly from 3 populations: lived at home, in private nursing homes and in public nursing homes. There were assessed for demographic data, history of falls, history of chronic health problems, history of depression, and confidence in their ability to maintain their balance. The instruments used STEADI, GDS, and the ABC. Gait, balance, and strength tests were conducted if a subject had increased fall risk on the results of the STEADI. The logistic regression analysis determined the variables that were associated with abnormal gait, balance problems and strength problems. A total of 427 subjects were included in the study. 62.6% had a balance problem, and 60.1% had inadequate strength. On multivariate analysis factors significantly positive associated with gait problems were: being aged =70 years (2.557(1.523–4.292)), and lacking self confidence in balance (5.907 (2.468 – 14.140)). The factors that associated with balance problems were being aged = 70 year (1.871(1.154 – 3.172)), having a history of chronic illness (1.844(1.046-3.52), lacking self-confidence in balance (5.815(2.647 – 102.771)) and living in rural area (2.921(1.407 – 6.067)). The factors significantly associated balance problems was being male (0.465(0.269 – 0.804)). These factors need to be taken into consideration when developing programs to reduce fall risk in the study population.
