Background: Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus is responsible for a variety of Kaposi’s sarcoma clinical
types,it is frequently shed in saliva more often than other body fluids. It causes a mild indolent disease in
immune-competent persons but is an aggressive, fatal disease in immune-suppressive patients.
objectives: this study aimed to detect the frequency of Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus among patients
on different types of immunosupressive drugs.
Material and Methods: A prospective study was carried to detect Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus- IgG
in saliva using an enzyme-linked immunoassay. Saliva samples were collected from 32 immune-suppressed
person visited dental clinic as a cases group, 30 patients on non immune-suppressive drugs were considered as
a positive controls and 30 healthy people appeared to be negative controls.
Results: High Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus -IgG seropositive result of 23 (25%) were detected
among study cases compared to positive controls of 8 (8.7%) and one healthy person (1.1%). The risk of
getting infection in this study among cases were high (Odd Ratio=24). The highest percentages of positive
serological results were detected in older age groups. Viral specific IgG identified in 71.4% of diabetics, 78.6%
of cases with autoimmune diseases and among smokers cases were 9 / 10 patients (90%) compared to 8/20
patients (40%) of positive controls.
Conclusion: Our findings indicate that the presence of Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus in saliva is a
recurring event in a sample of immunocompromised patients; therefore, serological screening is mandatory for
patient at high risk for KSAV infection.
