In-Vitro Anthelmintic Activity of Phlorotannins from Sargassum Ilicifolium

Author: ABINAYA M, LAVANYA R, NAGARAJ V
Abstract: Sargassum species are a group of macroalgae or seaweeds, which contains secondary metabolites known for its many remedial activities and pharmacological properties. The acetone: water extract rich in phlorotannins was used in this study. The phlorotannins of Sargassum ilicifolium was investigated for its in vitro anthelmintic property against Pheretima posthuman (Adult Indian earthworms). In this study, two different phlorotannin concentrations (20 & 40 mg/ml) were tested, which were involved in determining the time of death and paralysis of earthworm. Albendazole (100 mg/ml) was used as a standard reference whereas normal saline as control. When compared to the standard drug, phlorotannins expressed a notable anthelmintic activity at highest concentration of 40 mg/ml. The result shows that phlorotannins from Sargassum ilicfolium possesses vermicidal activity and found to be potent anthelmintic.
