Phytochemical screening, polyphenolic estimation and in vitro assessment of antioxidant activity of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Musa balbisiana inflorescence

Author: KRISHNA GOGOI, B.K.KONWAR
Abstract: Phytochemical screening of the aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Musa balbisiana inflorescence showed the presence of tannins and flavonoids in the aqueous and terpenoids, tannins and flavonoids in the alcoholic extracts respectively. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined using Folin–Ciocalteu and aluminium chloride method and antioxidant activities were measured using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay and ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) assay. The highest total phenolic content (5.90 ± 0.06 mg GAE/g d.w.) and flavonoid content (73.80 mgQE/g d.w.) was obtained from the ethanolic extract of inflorescence. The maximum activity of DPPH and the highest activity of FRAP was also shown by the ethanolic extract. Correlations between total phenolic and flavonoid content with antioxidant activities of the active extract were studied. Linear positive relationship was observed between DPPH free radical scavenging activity and the total phenolic content (R2=0.8947) and flavonoid content (R2=0.6384), as well as between the FRAP values and the total phenolic content (R2=0.8941) and flavonoid content (R2=0.7948). A correlation study between the two antioxidant capacity measurement systems was also done. A strong correlation (R2=0.9697) between the two measurement systems implies that the antioxidant/s present in the extract were able to scavenge free radicals (DPPH) as well as reduce oxidants (ferric ions).
