Resealed Erythrocytes as Targeted Drug Delivery System

Author: UPLOADED BY-ADMIN, R. D. AMRUTKAR, T. G. VYAWAHARE, DR. R. S. BHAMBAR
Abstract: Scientist began to study targeted drug delivery, because of the traditional drug delivery system had many disadvantages, such as high toxicity effect and high minimum effective dose. Various drug carrier systems have been developed including nanoparticles, liposomes, erythrocytes, etc. Various cellular carriers proposed are lymphocytes, leukocytes, platelets, granulocytes, and erythrocytes. Out of all these carriers, erythrocytes have been the most extensively investigated and found to possess great potential in novel drug delivery. The concept of ‘Resealed Erythrocytes’ loaded by a drug or other therapeutic agents, have been exploited extensively in recent year for both temporally and spatially controlled and targeted delivery of wide variety of drug and other bioactive agents owing to their remarkable degree of biocompatibility, biodegradability and series of other potential advantages. These resealed erythrocytes as targeted drug delivery system research suggest that to eliminate undesirable side effects of drug and increase patient compliance. For that system disease like diabetes, cancerous tumor could surely find its cure. The present review focuses on the potential applications of erythrocytes in drug delivery.
