Introduction: Dental erosion manifests with various forms in children. Several risk factors including
brushing technique, use of specific dietary constituents contribute to its causation. High socioeconomic status
may increase the risk of dental erosion owing to high incidence of risk factors.
Objective: To find out the prevalence of dental erosion among school children and describe the etiological
factors associated with it.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among school children aged 6 to 10yrs in
SPSR Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh. The sample was selected from a government and a private school to
ensure representation and enable comparison. After obtaining informed consent, a questionnaire was
distributed to parents/care givers and clinical examination of the children was conducted. All primary and
permanent teeth were evaluated for Dental erosion using the Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE).
Results: A total of 500 children were included in the sample. The overall prevalence (95% CI) was 1.2%
(0.6% – 2.6%). There was no difference in the prevalence between government and private schools. The most
common risk factor observed among the cases of dental erosion was the abrasiveness of toothpaste and
brushing technique, followed by the consumption of acidic and carbonated drinks.
Conclusion: The prevalence of dental erosion among the government and private schools in Nellore is
found to be relatively low. It is essential to educate the community on the choice of toothpaste, brushing
techniques, ill effects of frequent acidic drinks and carbonated drinks to combat dental erosion in children.
