Acharya Charak has distinctly pointed out that a physician should examine the state of the disease and then only proper drugs and treatment procedure be planned and applied.1 The Roga pariksha is done with Nidan panchak.2 The Nidan is first which is meant for the responsible factor in formation of disease; hence synonymously termed as Kaaran/Hetu. The form features and sadhyasadhyata (prognosis) of the disease depend upon the nature and strength of Nidan. The thorough assessment of Nidan keeps considerable importance to the treatment point of view too. Charakacharya has identically remarked the significance of Nidan parivarjan as it is included as basic and essential part of the treatment. The term Nidan Parivarjan is defined by Acharya as ‘to avoid such type of Aahar-Vihar which are elicited as causative factors of the disease’.3 It is initial and inevitable step without which the application of proper treatment proves to be futile. Thus, it keeps vital consideration in Ayurvedic treatment; curative and preventive both.
Aim and Objective: To discuss significance of Nidan in the onset and Nidan Parivarjan in the treatment of disease through classical references.
Material and Method: Bruhattrayee with commentaries.
