Seaweed Fucoidans As Viral Inhibitors: An Overview On Its Inhibitory Mechanism

Author: SARAVANAN MUNIAPPAN, ARUL BALASUBRAMANIAN, RAMALINGAM KOTHAI, SAM THAMBURAJ A
Abstract: Fucoidan are chemically a sulphated polysaccharide composed mainly of fucose, usually present in brown seaweeds. Fucoidan was extensively studied for its biological benefits through a variety of in vitro and in vivo techniques. This review focuses on the progress towards understanding fucoidan and its mechanism of viral inhibition during the viral life cycle from entry to exit of pathogenic viral strains. Fucoidan inhibits the diversified classes of virion by inhibiting viral adsorption, penetration, internalization, replication, reproduction, assembly and release. Further it is proven to be a potent immunomodulator which indirectly prevents viral infections. The review will serve as a source to, which might be beneficial for the future antiviral therapy. Hence, we have summarized the potential seaweeds falling under the category of red, brown and green macro algae and their stages of viral inhibition work that was done within the last two decades. We assume that this review can contribute as a theoretical basis to understand mechanism of action of fucoidan and inspire further product development of fucoidan for the treatment of lethal viral infections.
