Marine Cyanobacterium Phormidium formosum isolated from Mediterranean Sea Coast, Egypt was selected for the present secondary metabolites investigation. The effects of pH, temperature and light intensity were tested for the growth of Cyanobacteria and the production of antimicrobial activity. The antibacterial and antifungal effects of different solvent and water extracts of Phormidium formosum against (Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococus luteus, Serratiam arcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans) were examined. The antagonistic material was purified using Sephadex LH-20 and analyzed by HPLC. Data showed that the water extract of Phormidium formosum had more activity against most of the test organisms with pH 8.0 in 35psu of salinity at 25 C and light intensity 3000 lux during 8th day of incubation at the aerated condition in F/2 medium. The antagonistic material was inulin. So the cyanobacterium Phormidium formosum considered the new sources for the production of inulin about 7-10%. Our knowledge this is the first study on extraction inulin from marine cyanobacterium P. formosum.
