Amomum compactum known as Javanese cardamom is an endemic plant of West Java, Indonesia. Cardamom is
the "Queen of spices" and belongs to the expensive herbal group. The seed of the cardamom contain the essential
oil which is rich of eucalyptol that provides antibacterial, anticonvulsant, anti-cancer, anti-tumor, anti-fungal, antiinflammatory, antioxidants, insecticides or repellants, and in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. As good
quality cardamom extraction with the right procedure hence will be resulted essential oil with good quality.
Thirty articles were identified and the content that contributed to the extraction method of A. compactum were
involved. The information about conventional and advance extraction methods were investigated. The proposed
study has concluded that extraction methods of Java cardamom (A. compactum) consist of conventional and
innovative advanced procedures. The determination of the procedure based on the present of supporting
facilities. The conventional method known as low cost, require a large volume of solvents, resulting more
bioactive products but time consuming. While the innovative advanced procedure in the other hand is faster,
most of them are expensive but less effective in obtaining the bioactive compounds of the essential oil
