Preterm, Low birth weight and poor weight gain are important causes for neonatal admission in to NICU. The current study aimed to investigate the role of massage therapy with medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil as another nutritional method on the weight gain of NICU admitted babies. This is a prospective, randomized control study performed among 100 stable preterm babies admitted in the NICU of SRM hospital, Potheri, Tamil Nadu for a duration of 9 months. They were randomly divided into two groups: oil massage group as cases and non-oil massage group as controls. Weight gain was compared in these two groups during a 7 days interval. The two groups were matched for delivery, gestational age, birth weight, Sex, Head circumference and type of feeding. The mean weight gain on day 7 in the oil massage group was 100±1.2 g and whereas 50±1.3 g weight loss was observed in the control group. Significant differences were observed between the oil-massage group and the control group, respectively. The findings of this study suggest that transcutaneous absorption of MCT oil via massage therapy in preterm babies can result in improved weight gain in this age group.
